Filthy friends, the alt-rock supergroup featuring Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney and Peter Buck of REM, kicked off a 4-date mini tour at the Independent on San Francisco on August 29th. The group is essentially the Minus 5 plus Tucker, as Buck has played with the Minus 5 on and off since their inception, and the rest of Filthy Friends are Minus 5 leader Scott McCaughey, guitarist Kurt Bloch (also of The Fastbacks), and drummer Linda Pitmon. While the “supergroup” label gets thrown around a bit too casually sometimes, it’s hard to argue that it’s a misnomer for Filthy Friends by any metric. Record sales, critical acclaim, indie-rock cred… the various Filthy Friends check all the boxes.
Filthy Friends released their debut record Invitation on August 25 on Kill Rock Stars, and continue their tour in LA, Seattle, and Brooklyn.
Denver indie rockers Dressy Bessy, one of the few Elephant Six-related bands still fully active, opened the night with a rousing set of poppy rock. Check out photos from both bands’ sets…
