Jennylee—aka Jenny Lee Lindberg, bassist for LA psych-rock outfit Warpaint—recently released her debut solo LP, Right On!, and her tour hit the Chapel in San Francisco on January 28th. LA trio Facial opened the show, with a tight set of punk/thrash, rotating instruments frequently and sprinkling in constant reminders that the band’s website is fuckfacial.ORG. (One can only assume what you would find on the .com version of the URL. Feel free to check.)
Jennylee played almost the entirety of her debut LP, album opener “Blind” being the only song missing. She’s sort of the sneaky MVP of Warpaint, as her bass and backing vocals give structure to their more out-there arrangements, and it was good to see her take a well-deserved turn at the front of a project. As a solo act, she gets to stretch her legs vocally, but left the instrumentation to her band, save for strapping on the bass for a cover of Warpaint’s “CC” from their most recent self-titled record. While her solo work is definitely distinct from her main band’s sound, it’s moody-yet-dancey sound can definitely be described as “Warpaint adjacent.” The set seemed way too short, especially for the super-enthusiastic crowd, but that’s the thing with debut record tours: you’re probably going to run out of songs pretty quickly.
