Sleater-Kinney Perform “A New Wave” on Letterman

With a new album, No Cities to Love, out next week (and already streaming on NPR), reunited Sleater-Kinney hit The Late Show With David Letterman on Thursday, performing “A New Wave.”

Joined by Katie Harkin of the band Sky Larkin (who will be accompanying the bad on tour), Carrie Brownstein (now better known as “Portlandia’s Carrie Brownstein!” I guess) took lead vocals, and upped her Pete Townshend-ness to even new heights, supplementing her array of high kicks and guitar windmills with a very Townshend-esque all-white, flowy-pants ensemble. (Also keeping up S-K’s anti-establishment cred: white pants before Memorial Day!)

Unlikely Friends (members of BOAT/Math & Physics Club) Releasing Debut Record

Unlikely Friends, a new collaboration between Seattle-ites D. Crane of BOAT and Charles Bert from Math & Physics Club, release their debut record, Solid Gold Cowboys, on January 27. BOAT have long been a favorite here at Three Match Breeze, and if the first single, “Soft Reputation” (listen below) is any indication, Unlikely Friends don’t veer too far from that sloppy pop course. Which is a good thing. The album is a true collaboration, in an Outkast kind of way: D. Crane tells Brooklyn Vegan that he and Bert each wrote 6.5 of the 13 songs on the track, so they each get half the album. The demos I heard last year were pretty catchy even in their raw form, and the finished products sound superb.

2:54 Release video for “Crest,” Touring US Next Month

London-based sister duo, 2:54, have premiered a visceral, gritty black and white promo video to accompany “Crest,” a track from their second album, The Other I.  The video comes ahead of their U.S. tour with Honeyblood, which runs from late February through to March (including a date at the Rickshaw Stop in March), and will mark their first return to the States since their last outing supporting the XX in 2012.

Perfect Pussy Announce North American Tour Dates, Release Debut EP on Vinyl/CD

To celebrate a huge year for Perfect Pussy (we saw them last spring at Mercury Lounge in NYC), Captured Tracks is set to release the band’s debut EP I Have Lost All Desire For Feeling on vinyl and CD for the first time ever. The 12″ LP features music on the A-side and an etching of their signature triangular logo on the B-side. Along with the LP comes a 32-page photo booklet documenting the band’s year on the road.

The Masonic SF rang in it’s first post-renovation New Year with a funk/blues double bill of Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue and The North Mississippi Allstars. The New Breed Brass band opened the show after jamming in the lobby, and joined Trombone Shorty on stage at midnight for a balloon/confetti drop. Check out the gallery below.

De La Soul @ The Fillmore, 12.03.14

Hip-hop icons De La Soul played the Fillmore in San Francisco on December 3rd, part of the 25th anniversary tour of the Long Island trio’s landmark debut record, 3 Feet High and Rising. NYC rapper Dillon Cooper’s short but terrific set did a great job hyping up the crowd, and De La Soul did not disappoint with their own riveting set. Sturgill Simpson @ The Fillmore 11.20.14

Country singer-songwriter Sturgill Simpson played the first of three consecutive nights opening for The Drive-By Truckers at the Fillmore on November 20th. Undoubtedly the world’s premiere Kentuckian employing a crack guitarist from the Baltics (Estonian virtuoso Laur Joamets, AKA Lil Joe), Simpson was met by a greatly enthusiastic crowd that affirmed his standing as one of country music’s up-and-comers.
